Behind the Atelier

Are sewing machines a thing of the past? I’m sure many of us remember an old plastic box tucked away somewhere in the house holding this amazing machine. For some of us, you might even remember a treadle machine, standing in some place of honor (probably with a plant set on top). As a kid, I remember being fascinated with these machines. A machine that one can actually make clothes and textile items from one’s own design…cool! I loved taking the old box out and seeing how it worked as well as all the cute little wicker sewing boxes full of haberdashery to go along with it. Like a little jewelry box full of amazing little odds and ends. So I would try it out for myself, but to be honest, the machine of my youth had a mind of its own and I spent much of my time fighting with the tension knob and seam riper. And although it was an uphill battle, I never lost my interest for machine sewing.

And here is my atelier. I had done a lot of research over the years into various machine functions that would just make life easier. My top items included an automatic threader and thread cutter, lift/lower needle button, a top loading bobbin and extension board to support the material as I sew. However, sometimes I also just enjoy working my good old Singer sewing machine.
