Corn Husk Doll

A doll made out of corn husks with blond hair and a basket in her hand

Project: Autumn Memories

Fall is the time of year when the atelier kitchen becomes a collection of harvest activities. As well as arts and crafts, I am an avid urban gardener and Autumn is not only a time of enjoying the abundance of the earth and the work of our hands, but also the preparing for winter and the spring ahead. So my kitchen countertops and windowsills are filled with canning jars, drying herbs and saving seeds. And if that isn’t enough, all of the drying goodies for my upcoming projects that I find in nature… drying flower petals, walnut shells, acorn seeds and corn husks.

With so much activity around us, one has to pay attention for when things are at the perfect point to work with. Corn husks are particularly time-sensitive. They should be a little bit dry, but still flexible to work with. They tend to curl as they dry which is good for support structure of a doll, but some flatter pieces and fresh tassels for the top layers and hair are necessary. Otherwise, making your own Autumn corn husk doll is a great break from this busy time of year to sit for a spell and create a little bit of company to adorn your home this Fall.
