Forest Friends Baby Harem Pants

Project: Into the Woods

Although I love to see babies in traditional and heirloom garments, usually made out of a lightweight cotton batiste or your more classical children’s play clothes made out of sturdier woven fabrics, these garments do not usually allow for the best fit and mobility of active babies and children. But before I had children, I always imagined them dressed in the more traditional outfits. As I had only ever sewn with woven fabrics, my scope was a bit limited to the styles I felt comfortable with. However, once I saw the ease and comfort of garments made of knitted fabrics, I set out to add them to my sewing prowess.

As I wanted to make a pair of harem pants like other mothers dressed their babies in in my post-natal gymnastics class, I wanted them to be fun, playful and bold, which is typical to modern baby fashion. I bought a deep purple jersey to make the waist and ankel bands to contrast the lightness of the pants and play up a cute little black skunk that stood out on the pant pattern.
